Teocintli - meaning “sacred corn” in Nahuatl, is a sister project of Cultura Chocolate, that seeks to preserve the ancestral roots of maiz by reclaiming the pre-hispanic tradition of nixtamal in a community whose culture is rooted in corn but whose existence has been reduced to only the commodities of capitalism. Central to this project and integral to decolonizing this sacred seed is a community owned molino. Through the Teocintli Project, Cultura Chocolate, in collaboration with other community partners, will pilot “El Molino de Westwood '' and work to establish an accessible community ownership model that resists commodifying maiz and other ancestral ingredients and instead honor their indigenous importance and practice.
